LaPorte County Park Superintendent wins top award from the State!

Michigan City, IN (January 17, 2008) –The LaPorte County Parks Superintendent, Tim Morgan was the recipient of the top State award from the Indiana Park & Recreation Association (IPRA).

The award was given under the category of “Outstanding Professional”. The award is the highest honor the Association can confer upon an individual. This award recognizes a member for their consistent dedication to the provision of quality leisure service.

Tim Morgan has been employed with the LaPorte County Parks as the Superintendent since October of 1992. Tim oversees seven park properties and over 600 acres of parklands. Under his leadership, guidance, and foresight the parks department has grown into one of the finest in the state.

During his tenure with the Park, he has made a number of remarkable accomplishments. He is a leading proponent for enhancements to the parks and stresses awareness to preserve, protect, and manage natural, cultural, and recreational resources. He shows evidence of community awareness and demonstrates outstanding leadership in enhancing the quality of life and enjoyment of the outdoors for all ages.

He has shown commitment to public support and involvement in education, and the ability to build good employee relations among the staff and community. His lifelong passion and spirit for nature and commitment to God, his family, and his staff are paramount.

LaPorte County Parks Chief Naturalist Niki Schmutte said, “Tim exemplifies the true meaning of an Outstanding Professional. He has been a member of the IPRA for years and has served on many board positions. He recognizes individuals who have distinguished themselves through contributions to the quality leisure field and he himself has made countless contributions to the community as well.”

His achievements of new projects, new facilities and parkland along with his ability to receive many grants along the way has made him successful and has made LaPorte County Parks what it is today.

The citizens of LaPorte County have benefited greatly from Tim’s leadership. Last year over 251,275 individuals visited one of our 4 developed park properties. The award was presented to Tim Morgan in Indianapolis on January 16, 2008 at the IPRA’s State Conference.

Land and Water Grant for Red Mill Park

The LaPorte County Parks Department announced the award of a Federal Land
and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Grant assistance of $200,000.00 at the
March 8th meeting of the LaPorte County Park Board.  The grant project will
acquire +/- 80 additional acres to expand existing Red Mill County Park, the
former Girl Scout Camp, held by the LaPorte County Park Foundation. Project
will include rehab of an existing building into an Environmental Education
Center as well as trails development, group camping area, fishing node,
playground and restrooms.  The local share for the grant will be the donated
land value, so no local tax dollars will be expended. This project is
located off Holmesville Road, just northeast of the Purdue North Central
Campus. " This project couldn't happen without the Land and Water
Conservation Fund. There is so little money available for park acquisition
and development. Local funding has become tighter and tighter for Parks and
Recreation and it is essential to local communities to have access to other
public funding sources like the LWCF federal grant for park development,"
said Tim Morgan, LaPorte County Park Superintendent.
